We run basketball in both formats, and people regularly pick the wrong one for what they actually want. The distinction is less about skill than about how much running you would like to do.
3v3
Half court, small rosters, constant involvement. You touch the ball on nearly every possession, and there is nowhere to hide — which is the appeal for some people and the problem for others. Smaller rosters also mean a missing player is felt immediately.
5v5
Full court, full rotations, more of an actual team game. There is a bench, so a missed week does not sink your side, and the play is closer to what you grew up watching.
- Want maximum touches and a short evening? 3v3
- Want a bench, subs and full-court play? 5v5
- Not sure? Most people start 5v5 and try 3v3 the following season
Both sets of rules live on the basketball page, under their own tabs.
