Captains: What The Job Actually Involves

Someone has to hold the roster. It is less work than people fear, and it is mostly done before the season starts.

Every team needs one, and the role puts people off far more than it should. Here is the whole of it.

Before the season

You register the team, you get your players onto the roster, and you make sure everyone has signed the waiver. That is the bulk of the job and it happens once.

During the season

  • Pass on the schedule when it changes
  • Tell us early if you are going to be short — a forfeit helps nobody
  • Settle a disputed call with the other captain, or hand it to the site manager

What it is not

You are not a coach and you are not responsible for anyone’s performance. Nothing in our league policies asks a captain to be anything more than the person who answers the email.

If you are thinking about putting a team in, start from the calendar and pick a start date that suits you.
